Adrian Lumley-Smith

Commercial Director and General Counsel
Jane Paxman

Prior to joining 2Co Energy, Adrian gained over 20 years experience with Rio Tinto plc in legal and commercial roles of increasing seniority, accumulating broad experience in a number of jurisdictions. During this time he worked on a large number of diverse transactions from mergers and acquisitions in Europe, North and South America and Australia to joint ventures in these regions as well as the Middle East and Africa.

He has lived and worked in Australia (Melbourne and Perth) following Rio Tinto's merger with CRA and, in the UK, became part of the senior management team responsible for the successful development of the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories of Canada. He has created new legal departments, handled a number of litigious matters and provided training to senior management on topics ranging from directors' duties to antitrust issues.

In December 2006 Adrian became the principal in-house lawyer acting for Rio Tinto in its negotiations with BP that led to the formation of the Hydrogen Energy International Limited joint venture which Adrian was then seconded to as General Counsel and Company Secretary. There he again became a member of the senior leadership team and was very closely associated with the development of CCS projects in Abu Dhabi and California, together with oversight of the fast developing suite of laws that regulators globally were introducing to regulate CCS.

Adrian qualified as a solicitor in 1987 and spent a few years with Allen & Overy prior to joining Rio Tinto. He is married with three children and enjoys cycling, good food and wine and running what feels like a full time taxi service for his sons.
